Private or Public Facebook Group? How to pick the right group type for your business!

Private or Public Facebook Group? How to pick the right group type for your business!

So you have an amazing business, now you just need a community to help grow your authority, turn cold leads into warm buyers, and build your reputation.

You need a Facebook Group!

There are a number of reasons why you might need a Facebook group to help grow your business.

First, it can be an excellent way to connect with potential customers or clients who are interested in what you do. A group can also provide a forum for you to answer questions and give advice, which can build trust and credibility.

Additionally, a Facebook group can be a great way to stay top of mind with your target market, as well as generate leads and sales. By sharing valuable content, hosting events or webinars, and running promotions, you can encourage people to buy from you or use your services.

Finally, a Facebook group can also be a great way to build community and relationships with like-minded people. This can lead to referrals, joint ventures, and other opportunities down the line.

If you're not already using a Facebook group to grow your business, now is the time to get started!

But what type of group should you create?

Here's a quick guide to the different types of groups and when you should use them.

When it comes to creating a Facebook group, there are 3 different main types to choose from: Public,  Private Visible, or Private Hidden?  And the one you choose will depend on the purpose of your group, and what kind of group dynamic you're looking to create.

So, which one is right for you?

Public Facebook Groups

Public Facebook Groups are just that - open to anyone on Facebook. Anyone can join without needing approval, and the group's posts will show up in members' newsfeeds. If you're looking to build a community around a certain topic or interest, a public group is a great way to do it.

What kind of business would want a public Facebook group?

A company that wants to create a community around their product or service would want a public Facebook group. This would allow anyone and everyone to join the group and learn more about what the company has to offer.

A major drawback to having a public Facebook group is the lack of control. It will be a full-time job to manage members (and their content) in a public group. For this reason, we find it best to leave the Public Facebook Groups to celebrities, athletes, and big businesses who have the budget to properly manage a public group.

Private Visible Groups

Private Visible Groups (previously known as Closed Groups) are slightly more exclusive - members have to be approved by an administrator before they can join. This can be helpful if you want to keep out trolls or spammy users, but it also means that it might be harder to grow your group.

What kind of business would want a closed Facebook group?

A business that wants to create a more tight-knit community of users who are interested in what the company has to offer would want to join an online community group. This would allow the business to screen users before they join, and keep out anyone who might spam the group or cause problems.

It also allows the admin (that's you) to control the content of the group... The perfect way for a busy small business owner to build know, like, and trust for their brand and their products and services.

Private Hidden Groups

Private Hidden Groups (previously known as Private or Secret Groups)  are the most exclusive - only members who are invited by another member can join. This is great if you want to create a safe space for a smaller group of people, but it can also make it difficult to find new members.

What kind of business would want a Private Hidden Facebook group?

A business that wants to create a safe space for its employees or customers would want a private Facebook group. This would allow the business to control who has access to the group and keep out anyone who might not have the best intentions.

It's also a great option for businesses delivering an exclusive course as you can easily add paid members to the group.

So, which Facebook group type is right for your business?

It really depends on what you're looking for in a group. If you're looking for a safe space to build your following and deliver great value without having to take on a second full-time job of managing a Facebook Group, we find a Closed Visible Facebook Group works for most small biz owners, direct sellers, and solopreneurs.

Of course, just creating a group is not enough. You will have to be intentional about building your membership and cultivating engagement in your Facebook group.
